A Message from the Class Teacher, Mrs Allen
Year 5 have had a fun-filled, pirate-themed term as we have been studying the Robert Louis Stevenson classic, Treasure Island. We have written diary entries imagining life on board a pirate ship and are writing our own adventure stories. To inspire our writing, we designed and made our own desert islands.
In Maths, we have been looking at measures and angles, taking part in a variety of practical activities.
Our Topic has been North America. We have explored the countries and capital cities of this continent and have compared the various climates within it.
Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome back to another school year! The following information outlines Year 5’s topics for Term 1:
The children will be starting by looking at Place Value in Maths. Standard methods for all four operations will be developed across the year and we will be applying these skills to problem solving.
This term we will be looking at the story of Odysseus in conjunction with our Ancient Greece topic. We will be writing a range of fiction and non-fiction texts, including diary entries and non-chronological reports. In Key Skills, we will be developing ou range of punctuation, including using brackets to add information. Mrs Fidge will be working with the class on developing reading comprehension skills.
We are learning about the Ancient Greeks this term. We will be finding out about their daily lives and culture and seeing the impact they have had on today’s society. We will also be visiting Kent Life in Maidstone for an Ancient Greek themed day!
Mrs Fidge will be exploring Forces with the class this term.
We will be looking at special Christian celebrations and journeys in class. Later in the year, we will be comparing these with celebrations in Islam and Judaism.
Mr Booker will be leaing our PE sessions – please ensure that PE kits are in school at all times.
Maths and English homework will continue to be set on alternate weeks on a Friday – please make sure that it is handed in by Wednesday at the very latest. Spellings will be tested every Friday.
