Art & Design Curriculum Approach & Vision

At Selling Church of England Primary, our Art & Design curriculum reflects The Selling Way of Life—nurturing inclusive, creative learners who flourish through exploration, individuality, and community celebration. We believe Art is a powerful tool for self-expression, reflection, and connection—rooted in love, compassion, and the joy of discovery.

To deliver a high-quality, progressive curriculum, we use the Kapow Primary Art & Design scheme, now well established in its third year at Selling. Kapow supports consistency and ambition in Art teaching, offering a carefully sequenced curriculum that ensures children revisit and build on key knowledge and techniques across year groups. The scheme aligns closely with the National Curriculum for Art & Design (DfE, 2013)—ensuring pupils produce creative work, develop proficiency in a range of techniques, evaluate and analyse artistic outcomes, and learn about great artists and cultures. Kapow’s step-by-step videos, clear knowledge organisers (KOs), and presentation tools enable all pupils to feel confident in all lessons.

We have mapped long-term plans in light of updated class structures, ensuring coverage across all key stages. Children begin each unit by identifying key knowledge in their books, which are organised to separate Art (front) and Design & Technology (back), supporting clarity and purpose. A focus on prior learning and curriculum strands from EYFS to Year 6 ensures progression is clearly visible and understood by both staff and pupils.

In line with our school vision, Art is celebrated both within and beyond the classroom. Children’s artwork is showcased in the local church, around themes like Harvest, and at community events such as the village fete—giving their creativity a wider audience and real platform. These links also reflect our Christian values of compassion, perseverance, and Umunthu—“I belong, therefore I am”—by affirming each child's unique voice and cultural expression.

Year 6 Art Drawing - Making my voice heard (November 2024)

Look at these incredible final pieces we created in Oak Class! We combined different media and techniques to create a piece which reflected ourselves, and an issue or belief that was important to us. Heartwarming isn't it? Well done Oak class!

Year 3 and 4 Drawing - Growing artists (October 2024)

Beech Class have made botanical drawings like the detailed studies of flowers by Charles Darwin and Carl Linneus, putting their shading techniques to the test!

Harvest Art at Saint Mary's Church (October 2024)

All children at Selling C of E Primary School have worked hard on a Harvest festival project for our beloved Saint Mary's Church, compiling different art pieces on the theme of Harvest and showcasing their current learning in Art lessons, from pointillism in Year 6 to frottage and shading in Year 3 and 4. Well done everyone!

Year 6 Painting - Pointillism (September 2024)

We had lots of fun in Oak class using pointillism to create some beautiful Autumn landscapes using paint with coton buds, using watercolour pens, using paint and our own fingers even! Or simply using a small brush and paint.

Year 2 Designs - Flower printing & Discs decorations (September 2024)

Another Forest School session with Mrs Cassidy this afternoon. Blossom class enjoyed Tataki-Zomi's style of flower printing and decorated discs cut with a bow saw. How creative Blossom class, well done!
