Design and Technology

Intent

At Selling C of E Primary School we believe that our Design and Technology curriculum should allow children to be imaginative, creative and that they should be encouraged to use and explore a wide range of different materials and tools. We also believe that it is important that children should be experience basic cookery skills which will serve them well in later life.

The intent of our Design and Technology curriculum is to deliver opportunities to the children that are accessible and rewarding to children of all ages and abilities. This will result in:

- The development of designing skills by making drawings, using annotations and making notes.

- The exploration and use of a wide range of materials and tools to create and implement design ideas.

- The ability to reflect upon and think critically about their own designs. To evaluate both their designs and final pieces, and to suggest possible improvements in future projects.

- The children being aware of the importance of hygiene and safety when working with food and have basic cookery skills.

Implementation

The key skills, understanding and technical vocabulary linked to Design and Technology are taught specifically and then applied to a Design and Technology project.

Using the topic enquiry question as a basis for Design and Technology projects allows the children to immerse themselves more deeply in topic work through activities like designing and building Roman shields as part of a History enquiry, researching, designing and cooking foods that can be part of a healthy balanced diet as part of a Scientific enquiry.
