Geography

At Selling CE Primary School, we see Geography as more than a study of maps and landscapes—it is a journey of discovery that celebrates God’s magnificent creation. In keeping with our Christian ethos, our Geography curriculum is designed to nurture not only curious and critical thinkers but also compassionate and responsible stewards of the world.

Drawing on the engaging, enquiry-based approach of the Kapow scheme, our programme inspires pupils to explore the diversity of the world around them. Through practical fieldwork, thoughtful analysis, and cross-curricular learning, students develop a deep understanding of how natural and human forces shape our environment. They learn to see every river, mountain, and urban center as part of a larger tapestry—a creation that reflects God’s infinite creativity and love.

Our Christian vision underpins every lesson. As pupils investigate geographical phenomena, they are encouraged to reflect on their role as caretakers of God’s world, embracing values of compassion, perseverance and Umunthu. By recognising the interconnectedness of people, places, and the natural environment, our students grow into global citizens who are not only informed but also motivated to contribute positively to their communities and the wider world.

In this way, our Geography curriculum does more than meet academic goals—it cultivates a spirit of wonder, respect, and responsibility. We believe that understanding the world is a pathway to appreciating the divine, and through this journey, our pupils are empowered to care for the Earth as faithful stewards, guided by our Christian values every step of the way.

Our Intent

Our curriculum is designed to spark curiosity and nurture inquisitive, thoughtful learners who appreciate the complexity and beauty of the environment. Guided by our Christian values, our intent is to:

  • Foster Curiosity and Inquiry:
Inspire pupils to question, observe, and explore their surroundings, developing the skills to measure, record, and analyse geographical phenomena.

  • Build a Holistic Understanding:
Help pupils understand how natural processes and human activity shape both local and global landscapes, linking their learning to real-world contexts.

  • Instil a Sense of Stewardship:
Encourage a deep respect for God’s creation, empowering pupils to become responsible custodians of the environment, with an awareness of their role in preserving its beauty and diversity.

Our Implementation

Our Geography curriculum is delivered using an engaging, enquiry-based approach that aligns with the National Curriculum while integrating our Christian vision. Key elements of our implementation include:

  • Spiral Curriculum Design:
Lessons are structured to revisit and build upon core geographical concepts—such as locational and place knowledge, human and physical geography, and map skills—ensuring a progressive deepening of understanding across each year group.

  • Hands-On Learning and Fieldwork:
Practical fieldwork and local investigations bring geographical concepts to life. Whether exploring the school grounds or local landscapes, pupils learn firsthand how to collect data, make observations, and draw connections between their local environment and the wider world.

  • Enquiry-Based and Cross-Curricular Activities:
Lessons are driven by open-ended enquiry questions that encourage critical thinking. Cross-curricular links with subjects like science, history, and religious studies help pupils see the relevance of Geography in a broader context, making learning both engaging and meaningful.

  • Inclusive and Adaptive Practices:
We provide tailored support to ensure every pupil can access the curriculum. Teachers are equipped with comprehensive resources and ongoing professional development, enabling them to adapt lessons to meet diverse learning needs while challenging and extending all learners.

  • Integration of Christian Values:
Every lesson invites pupils to reflect on their responsibility as stewards of God’s creation. Through their study of the natural world, pupils are encouraged to see the hand of divine creativity in the order and diversity of the environment, fostering both wonder and a commitment to care for our planet.

Our Impact

The impact of our Geography curriculum is measured through a blend of formative and summative assessments, ensuring that learning is both deep and enduring. We expect that, through their engagement with Geography, pupils will:

  • Develop Strong Geographical Skills and Knowledge:
Pupils will build a robust understanding of key geographical concepts and techniques, enabling them to interpret maps, conduct fieldwork, and analyse data with confidence.

  • Become Thoughtful, Informed Citizens:
By connecting local observations with global issues, pupils will grow into active, responsible citizens who appreciate cultural diversity and understand the importance of sustainable practices.

  • Show Evidence of Growth and Progress:
Our structured assessments—including quizzes, fieldwork evaluations, and reflective exercises—allow teachers to track individual progress, identify areas for improvement, and celebrate achievements. This ongoing feedback ensures that every pupil’s learning journey is recognised and supported.

In summary, the Geography curriculum at Selling CE Primary School is a dynamic blend of academic rigour and Christian values. It empowers pupils to explore, understand, and care for the world around them, preparing them to become not only skilled geographers but also compassionate and responsible stewards of God’s creation.
